Whiplash

Roses and pearls handbag 127394335_6e0329340c_o.gif

This is competition #3 that I have entered. The challenge this week: Chic to Classic. What could be more chic and classic than pearls and roses? Here is my handpainted canvas rose handbag with faux pearl handle.

It just boggles my mind that more people aren’t entering in the Whiplash weekly competitions. I know there are over 700 subscribers in bloglines for people reading Whip Up on a regular basis. So, with all of the crafty people out there, where are the submissions??? Is it the fear of being judged? The fear of losing? (I should have wrote this last week). Don’t think of it that way. Forget all about the prizes and judging. It’s all about sharing right? Most people have a crafty/art blog to SHARE their stuff right? So why not start sharing it with other Whip Up readers? For me, I know it has been a great way to discover other wonderfully talented people out there in the blog world, make new friends AND see other peoples take on the different challenges. It’s no fun if you can’t see all the great inginuity and what better way to share all that inginuity than through Whip Up?

Hi! Beautiful rose purse! I always admire people who can draw. I echo your thoughts on the number of whiplash entries — maybe the timeline is too short??? Thanks for commenting earlier!

I love the purse, great talent with the handpainted roses, I’m jealous 🙂

I’ve been wanting to join in on Whiplash but every week by the time I find time and I get my act together and come up with a project the competition for the week is already closed…

So until I can get it all together and join in I’m admiring everyone who can get it all together 🙂

  5. Way to go with expressing your feelings. I like that. You are not going to make me feel bad though, I am barely hanging on with all the swaps and trying to keep up with others, and I haven’t even been able to post myself in a few days!!! But your enthusiasm should be commended!

Love the purse BTW! I swear I will get my notecards in the mail tomorrow!!!

wow, i kinda thought the same thing. i also think it’s weird that very few people are even posting or writing about it. i seems like a v big deal to me… and a great opportunity. not to mention the amount of time that kathreen is putting into managing it, and the time the judges are putting into looking over each and every entry.

strangley quiet response from what is otherwise a very active community. part of me wonders if it is a timing thing? i know i am v busy preparing for a craft show in june, and so spend as much time as i can on making things for the show!

Why don’t people submit? – because we have a life!! – yes we love crafting and love reading about new ideas and inspiration but we don’t want to be forced to do something either (a) to someone else’s theme or (b) in a set time limit – creativity is about enjoying yourself and a time limit does tend to put a damper on that – and its about expressing yourself and the themes aren’t necessarily indicative of that – also who has the time to create something worthwhile in just one weekend? – maybe if you spent ALL weekend on it but most people have other things in their life they want to do as well as crafting – THATS why more people don’t enter

  10. Ketutar says:

    Well… violetsrose… your comment sounds a bit… hmmm… bitter.
It’s not nice to tell people that they don’t have a life if they have the time, interest and energy – and creativity and inspiration – not to talk about courage and adventurousity enough to participate in projects like Whiplash.

I have a life. And I have enough creativity, inspiration and skills to whipup the whiplash challenge on a couple of hours over the weekend. Don’t you? 😉
I am not “forced” to do anything, I have chosen myself to give part of my weekend to a craft project instead of… what? What is life but expression and creativity 😉 I find the whiplash as a nice break into being forced to come up ideas and themes by myself all the time.

I also think that it’s common courtesy to share what I have instead of just expecting someone else to do all the work and oneself just enjoying the results…

So, you see, there’s many ways of seeing this, violetsrose. Maybe you got surprised if you participated. You might actually be able to whipup something in just a couple of hours. But maybe you don’t dare. >:-)

I think Kismet’s handbag is very pretty and very much “worthwhile” and she doesn’t sound like she doesn’t have a life or that she is being forced into anything, or that she isn’t expressing herself or being creative… quite the contrary.

I think what violetsrose is trying to say is that one week is not enough time for many people to come up with a crafting idea and implement it. Lack of time might be due to children, jobs, health, money- whatever. Obviously, many in this community have just enough time to work on whatever projects they are in the midst of and whatever is going on in their lives. Good for you for having the time and energy to participate in this competition! 🙂 But I think that “fear” is not the reason why people aren’t participating. Instead of asking why people aren’t participating, maybe we should look at how the competition can be improved to allow for more people to want to participate?

  12. Oh I agree! My opinion here was a hypothetical question really to myself. I had no idea it would be put into a whiplash post. The fear thing was just a take on last weeks theme for whiplash. I realize that time is an issue and think that my comment on participation spurred people to voice their opinions and suggestions about it all. It’s all good though. Maybe the guidelines will be changed to allow for more time 🙂 I still have to commend the organizers for all of the work that’s been done to get sponsors, prizes and everything going for Whiplash.
