If you go through San Luis Obispo, eat at Big Sky Cafe - delicious food! Also get coffee at Linnea's on Garden Street. The farmer's market in SLO is on Thursday evenings - it is an amazing experience. I lived in SLO for 7 years and miss it dearly...the downtown area is just fabulous to stroll through and explore - the kids would love playing in the creek that runs through. You'd have to also add gum to "Bubble Gum Alley". These are all places you could ask any local about when you get there to be pointed in the right direction! Yay for fun road trips! It's on Sundays. They often have kids stuff like pony rides and the beach is very close by. We go to that area sometimes for haircuts and make a day of it.
