name plaques and giant rutabagas

I made these little name plaques for a friend who will be visiting her nephews this weekend. She wanted to give them a gift for their rooms.I finished them up with ribbon for hanging.

We also picked up our CSA produce today to find these giant rutabagas. The box said, “do not fear the rutabaga”. Ha! I thought that was cute. We peeled them, and cut them into “fries” and roasted them with a bit of oil and salt. They were very yummy–nothing to fear at all.

    I’ve never had a rutabaga before… I’m intruigued!

I’m with Michelle – what do they taste like? Are they similar to any other root vegetable? I think I might go and hunt some down. 😀

“Do not fear the rutabaga”…so cute! Sounds like you get a touch of humor adding into your CSA basket (: Those plaques are so darling!! I know your friend’s nephews will love them. So sweet of you to make them (:

Here in the UK we call them ‘swedes’ and they are very popular. In the supermarket they can be bought whole or a half, and I have a half in the fridge.

Mostly they are boiled (take forever) and mashed. They are good mashed with cheese. If boiled to be mashed they must be drained and dried or they can be a bit watery.

They are also roasted, much the nicest way to eat them.

They used to be a traditional part of a Nottinghamshire Christmas lunch.
