#8 Quick & Easy Wreath

Thursday, December 14th, 2006
fluffywhitewreath.jpg

I made this wreath a couple of weeks ago. It’s really quick and easy to make. Using some old tulle-like fabric and an old wire hanger, I simply cut (half hazardly) 1-2 inch strips of fabric- about 10 inches long. Lots of them. I shaped the hanger into a circle leaving the hook on top for hanging. Then I tied all the strips around until it looked nice and fluffy. Added some glittery apples and a ribbon and there you have it. Really easy to do- even my little guy helped out.

You could use any kind of fabric to make this. Even lace, or ribbon would work. To make this wreath more of a recycling project, you could use any kind of plastic-ky material from grocery bags to cereal box bags.

Long shorts & skirt-to-shirt

Thursday, July 13th, 2006

Here are some wardrobe refashions that I’ve been working on over the last couple of weeks (slowly taking pictures as I go). I made three pairs of long shorts out of a pair of blue plaid capris, khaki pants and black dress pants. While looking through my closet I realized that I had 5 pairs of khaki pants and three black (plain & safe I know) and decided I could part with one pair of each for new shorts. I also made a halter style top (right) out of an old skirt that didn’t fit right. The diagram shows how I did it. Pretty straight foward I think. I think it worked out really well. And, lucky for me, I got a new strapless bra in the mail today that fits perfectly and works very well with my new top (thanks mom).

A flowery bag

Tuesday, July 11th, 2006

whipbadge.gifI’ve been messing around with these little crocheted flowers trying to think of what to do with them and finally decided that they would look cute on a bag. I had half of a bag made (from the front pockets and other parts of some old overalls) that I discovered while “trying” to pack. Seeing it crumpled up and only half done gave me an incredible urge to complete it-so I did. I added lining and flap to close, a crocheted strap and embelished it with my little flowers. Oh, and did a little embroidery on it too. And thought, oh what the heck, I’ll enter it in the whiplash compitition for this month. I think Ill enter it in the *fancy* category? Well, here it is:

When you have too much to do, why not make a bag?

Good News, Good News!! We were given an offer on our house last week, counter offered and it was accpeted on Satuday. We are now in the 4th day of the option period (7 days). The home inspection is tomorrow, so we are keeping our fingers crossed that all goes well with it. We’re pretty sure our house will have no problems, but you never know with those very maticulous inspectors.

So, with the house sale under way, we have TONS to do! My list keeps getting longer, and longer. We are planning a garage sale this weekend to rid ourselves of lots of junk and extra weight so that we will have less to move across TX, NM and into AZ. PLUS, my darling little sister’s wedding is the weekend after we plan to move and I have volunteered to do the invitations (done), thank you cards, rehearsal dinner invites, the tossing bouquet, best wishes cards, and the wedding programs. Plus, there are gifts to be made, projects that need to be finished before we move, and books that need to be read. Yikes!!! I’d better get moving! But, something happens to me when my plate gets piled too high. I become paralyzed and unable to do any projects on my ‘to do’ list. Instead I do things like make this bag (that I totally don’t need right now). I just couldn’t help myself though. I saw Moki’s tutorial and could do nothing else until I made one.

Placemat bag

The bottom was a green striped placemat (from a yard sale $.25) and I just happened to have this leaf print that went perfectly with it. I left the corner flaps on the outside and sewed them to the sides to create the square pattern and fringe. I love the way it turned out. Thanks Moki for the great tutorial! Now I need not look at anything else on this freakin’ computer or I will be very easily distracted!

Postcard collage

I made this a while back because I needed some art for my hallway. I actually got the idea from a show on HGTV called Design Remix. They made something similar using old matchbook covers. I used a 4′ x 1′ plank of old wood I had in the garage and sanded it down a bit so that is had a smooth surface. Then I took a stack of old postcards that I bought from a yardsale ($2) and arranged, trimmed and glued them onto the wood plank. I added a couple a coats of varnish and framed it up with corner molding ($10) that I painted black. I love my original and querky piece of art and it cost me less than 15 bucks!

Oh my gosh!!! The door bell just rang and my new camera has arrived!!! Yippeeeee! Gotta go learn how to use it! Bye!

Just a little something

I made this box for a special someone-and it’s not because she sent me a special pear necklace either! She knows why. :) I made it out of one of these cool little tea boxes my gramps gave to me.

Whiplash- No Fear

This week’s challenge for Whiplash’s weekly compitiion is No Fear.

I fear a lot of things, and one of them is the quick passage of time and the unknown of the future. What a better way to pass time than with a fun little clock reminding me to go forth WITHOUT FEAR!

I’ve had a long facination with clocks. I have been making them for a couple of years. Usually my clocks involve cutting wood or MDF with a scroll saw and then lots of painting. This time I thought I’d do something a little different than my usual. You know those CD’s you get in the mail forom a certain internet service? Well this is made out of one of those CD’s. Instead of throwing them away, I have been saving them vowing to someday make something out of them. A clock mechanism, some tooling metal, assorted papers, glue, ink and colored pencils all came together to make this piece.

Inspire Me Thursday- Find the art in the everyday

Tuesday, April 25th, 2006

“This week, let’s take a moment to slow our pace and really take notice of the common, everyday objects found in our daily life. What ordinary things can you find to make extrordinary art? Look for things you can use in your art. Or items that can be used as a tool to create art. Or perhaps an object that simply inspires you to create. This week, your challenge is to find the art in the everyday.”

Dinner Wind Chime I’ve been walking around the house all week trying to look at my everyday stuff as art. One thing that I look at and use every single day are my spoons, forks and knifes (everyone has to eat of course). But I couldn’t think of what to do with them. It was in the middle of the night that it hit me(my little one is sick and I was up for most of the night). I have some old forks, spoons and knives that are old and not part of my everyday set- perfect for hammering, drilling and bending. So today, with my husband’s help, he bent (with his massive muscles) and I drilled and hammered to make this fun little wind chime. It also gave me a reason to pull out my bead collection. Not only was this a really fun project, but now I have a new wind chime for my back yard tree!! Now I’m going to go take a nap! Have a great day!!

Shipping Crate Chest

Making the old and unused, NEW again!
shipping crate.jpgshipping crate primed.jpg
My hubby works at a place where large things are frequently shipped to them in these large shipping crates. This one happened to be in pretty good condition so my hubby snatched it up bringing it hope for me to do something with. It had so much potential! It was very sturdy and all wood. After sitting in our garage for a few months, I finally tackled the project. Not having a coffee table in our living room, and being too frugle to buy a cheaply made one at the store, I decided to make this into a coffee table/chest. I did lots of sanding, filling of wholes with wood puddy, more sanding, priming and then I added wood trim (that just happened to be in our house) to the bottom. I cut the angles (mitered edges?) on the trim all by myself with a miter box and saw. Then I did the decorative painting using interior green and cream paint that was in the garage and acrylic craft paint for the detailed flower edging. After all that, I did a crackle finish which I antiqued with brown glaze (had in the craft room). Finally gave it a few coats of varnish and here it is. Oh, I added hinges and closing clasp thingy’s. It’s so perfect for drinks and snacks and kicking your feet up after a long day!

The total cost for this was only about $8 for the hinges and clasps. How’s that for frugal!

New Bell-chime

Bell Makings.jpgbell1.jpgbell2.jpg

Here is a bell/chime that I put together out of random things I had around the house. My grandfather (who is an avid junk and jewel collector) loves going to yard sales and buying junk that he thinks are jewels in the rough. Unfortunately for the whole family, we are the ones that ends up with his junk. Over the years, I have been given quite a large collection of old costume jewelry, some of it nice and some not so nice. These things I treasure and enjoy looking through. They remind me of my many years I’ve spent with both my grandparents. My grandfather has also given me lots of other stuff that I have had absolutely no use for. In my recent de-cluttering mode, I came across an old broken apart light fixture that he gave me about 3 years ago( upper left pic). Not knowing what to do with it, I put it in a box and forgot all about it until the other day when I pulled it out again. Determined to not have to throw it away (it has a really cool warn and patina look to it) I decided to do SOMETHING with it- not sure exactly what though. Later I rummaged through my old jewelry collection and came across a rather bulky copper-ish style necklace with the same color patina. Note: I threw a penny in with the beads (above) so you could see how large they are. Well, fate had spoken to me, and it was decided- I would make a bell/chime. I strung it together with an old piece of leather string I found and finished it with a triangular piece I made from copper colored polymer clay. I really like how it turned out. My grandpa would be proud!!
