Happy World Breastfeeding Week

August 1-7,2007

I had a great time at the World Breastfeeding Week fair here in Tucson today. Great information, live music, door prizes, food, boob cookies, lots of beautiful women and babies.

Breastfeeding: The 1st Hour – Welcome Baby Softly

* Save a million lives by breastfeeding. American Academy of pediatrics states that postnatal infant mortality decreased by 21% in breastfed infants.

* 3.6 million dollars could be saved annually (for the health care system alone) if we met the following goals(Healthy People 2010): 75% women initiate breastfeeding, 50% breastfeed to 6 months, 25% breastfeed to 12 months.

* It is better for the mommy, baby and the environment.

* Most women have made the decision on whether or not to breastfeed by the time they are pregnant, but they do this based on: inaccurate information, fears of pain, misconception that formula is equal to breastmilk.

* Fomula companies make at least $2billion annually.

* It’s important, beautiful and amazing.

I am 6 mos pregnant (a month from my 42nd birthday I will be a first time mom!). I am trying to educate myself as much as possible so I can have a successful experience for both myself and my new daughter. I look forward to bonding and nourishing my child this way. I will visit the links you have provided, thanks in advance for the info!

By the way, I love your blog, thanks for sharing your work and ideas. I found it a while back through IF.

I breastfed both my babies. I cannot imagine having to go through the rigamarole of preparing bottles, warming milk, cleaning, using plastic (!!!) sleeves for milk. Luckily, being Canadian, the government allowed a generous maternity leave so that my babies never had to use a bottle — straight from boob to sippy cup. Nothing is more convenient, loving, relaxing or special than breastfeeding.

This photo collage is so lovely, thanks for sharing it! I am proud to say that I am currently nursing my 3rd baby. Even though when I’m done I have two deflated balloons, I would do it again and again in a heartbeat!

    Hi,
I was searching the internet for a suitable image to use as an illustration on a title page of a student binder for a course I teach at Douglas College in New Westminster, BC, Canada. I came across the collage on your Happy World Breastfeeding Week 2007″page. I wonder if I may have permission to copy this collage for the purpose stated above. I would be happy to include a credit. Thank you for your consideration.
